Noticing
This commission for The Casco's pocket park is her first outdoor installation. To bring her long standing Murmuration series out into the elements, Christina worked with a small family foundry in Rhode Island to cast her hand-formed shapes in a lacquered bronze that will age slowly over time. The individual bronze shapes reference many natural forms and are meant to encourage curiosity and imagination. What do they look like? Notice the cast shadows on a sunny day, the spritely stems that hold the piece into the wall. Do the shadows grow as the day turns? When it rains, can you find any upturned pieces like cups for thirsty birds? The longer you stay with the work, the more it has to offer you.
Once you begin to appreciate the pieces on the wall in all their delight, noting how the curves of the installation break up the lines of the park and the city, you might settle into a place of noticing and look all around you. At your feet, you might notice a trail of bronze coins embedded in the pavers. What might they say to you if they could speak?
Thank you for paying attention.
